**June 30th, Launch!**
At roughly 8:30 am on [Ethereum block 12736300](https://etherscan.io/block/12736300), the Secret Tower came alive. The NFT community did not “mint” Wizards, they “summoned” them! All 10k Wizards were [summoned](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/summoning) in under 30 minutes, and the experience was hailed as one of the most exhilarating project launches in the NFT community at large. Project creators [@ElfJTrul](https://twitter.com/ElfJTrul) and [@dotta](https://twitter.com/dotta) rejoiced and immediately began the arduous task of completing all Roadmap items. The Cult begins.

**August 26, Murals!**
Days after launch, Elf and Dotta begin planning ways to spread the word of the Cult. A full-scale [mural campaign](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/murals) was launched and by August the first Wizard, Hedge Wizard Lenora of the Realm, [appeared on the wall of an arcade in Austin, Texas](https://twitter.com/forgottenrunes/status/1430545511027597313). Many other murals appeared soon after in Miami and Los Angeles.

**September 22, The Book of Lore!**
The Forgotten Runes [Book of Lore](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/writing-in-the-book-of-lore) is a core feature of the project. This digital tome allows Cult members to create on-chain lore about their Wizards. The Book of Lore is ever growing, ever changing, as hundreds of lore entries have been entered. This Book is a fundamental tool of the project which reinforces the core thesis: As an NFT holder, you are in control of the token's life, status, and growth. With creativity and engagement, you can level-up your Wizard to a status higher than when you received it. Creating Lore is a vital part of that leveling-up. All legends throughout history have a rich story behind them, and our Cult members are empowered to do the same for their Wizards. **October 12th, Coinbase NFT!**
Forgotten Runes is [announced](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/coinbase) as one of the first projects to be included in the launch of Coinbase NFT. Wizards appear on the launch page of Coinbase NFT, as well as a brief appearance on CNBC.

**October 20th, TV Animation!**
Elf and Dotta have been dreaming big, and intend to push Forgotten Runes far beyond the NFT space. With their third team member [@bearsnake](https://twitter.com/bearsnake_21), they leveraged professional connections in the entertainment industry to secure a [TV development deal with Titmouse Studios](https://www.awn.com/news/forgotten-runes-wizards-cult-nft-universe-gets-own-tv-show) in Los Angeles. As part of this deal, an animated short begins production. This short is scheduled to be released in March 2022.

**October 31st, The Great Burning!**
The Cult was [airdropped 1112 mysterious NFTs called “The Sacred Flame”](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/forgotten-souls) a few weeks prior. On Halloween, the basement of The Secret Tower was opened, and Cult members we able to use their Flames to dramatically BURN a Wizard on a pyre! In return, a limited collection of Forgotten Souls was revealed. This collection included [many new characters](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/lore-of-forgotten-souls) like Zombies, Liches, and Ghouls, as well as ultra-rares like the Grim Reaper and Nosferatu.

**November 17th, Walk Cycles!**
Cult members were given yet another airdrop, this time [full walk cycles of their Wizards!](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/walkcycles) No longer were these NFTs just simple static images, now the Wizards were alive and able to fully walk around in all directions. These walks were first deployed into the super popular [Worldwide Webb 3](https://twitter.com/Worldwide_WEB3), meaning if you own a Wizard, you can fully walk around as your Wizard. Other open metas follow soon after including [Tollan Worlds](https://twitter.com/tollan_worlds), [hyaliko](https://twitter.com/hyaliko), and the upcoming [Atlantis World](https://twitter.com/atlantis0x). The founders believe that metaverse utility for NFTs is the strongest path forward.

**November 28th, Donut breaks World Record!**
Yes, it’s true. The Jelly Donut with Slime, an artefact from the Forgotten Souls collection, [breaks the world record](https://twitter.com/MagusWazir/status/1465342601385721866) for most expensive donut ever sold. lol.

**December 15th, Official Forgotten Runes Game/Meta!**
After months of coordination, the team finally [announces](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/forgotten-runiverse-press-release) they have officially signed a deal with Bisonic Games to create _Forgotten Runiverse_, a “create-to-earn” blockchain based game. A small preview of battle animation is shown, and the community learns they will be able to buy and own land in the Runiverse. The public land sale is set to commence in Q1 of 2022. **December 24th, Merch boxes and Ponies!**
Along with the most impressive swag box the NFT community has ever seen, Cult members are treated with yet ANOTHER AIRDROP: [Ponies](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/ponies)!!! It was a Christmas miracle. Sweatshirts, candles, stickers, pins, and socks were delivered on Christmas Eve, with QR codes leading to a free Pony! Wizards began riding these cute ponies all over Twitter, and the holiday known as "Wizmas" officially began.

_Forgotten Souls_ is a collection of NFT-based characters that represent the transmutation of a _Forgotten Runes Wizard_.

The minting is "free" in that there is no fee beyond gas, but the cost is burning a [_Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult_ NFT](https://opensea.io/collection/forgottenruneswizardscult) along with a [_Sacred Flame_](https://opensea.io/collection/infinityveil).

When a Wizard is passed through the Flame the original tokens are destroyed and a new _Forgotten Soul_ NFT is created.

However, Black Magic is unpredictable and there is a chance you will receive an Undesirable. Read on to understand the _Forgotten Souls_ Collection.

## Overview

_Forgotten Souls_ are a transmutation of the original Wizard passed through the flame. There are 3 possible outcomes:

- You receive a Soul that is a transmutation of your specific Wizard
- You receive an Undesirable
- You receive an Ultra Rare

When you burn a Wizard, the Soul is significantly influenced by the Wizard's original traits.

The odds of receiving an Undesirable are about 1 in 10.

## The Sacred Flames

The Sacred Flames were [airdropped for free on October 1st, 2021](https://etherscan.io/tx/0x7307bf0e38abc8ae7b8322dbb20f6a389cec8b01e43c18fb2dbe78b0ab295132) to the first 101 Wizards who wrote in [The Book of Lore](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/lore) and the earliest Wizard holders. You can read more about their distribution in [this post](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/forgotten-souls).

## How it Works

A Soul is "minted" when a Wizard is burned.

**The Wizard NFT will be destroyed, the Flame NFT will be destroyed, and a new Soul NFT will be returned.**

The Soul returned to you is not completely random in that you are receiving a _transmutation_ of your Wizard, in most (9 out of 10) cases.

Q: If I burn, is there a chance I receive nothing?

A: You will always receive an ERC-721 token in return. (Whether or not you find that desirable is another matter.)

Q: Is my Soul affected by the Wizard that I burn?

A: Usually the Soul you receive will be a transmutation of your Wizard. However, In some cases you may receive an Undesirable. In some cases, an Ultra Rare.

## Collection Stats

There is a max supply of 1112 _Forgotten Souls_. This cap is both set by [the smart contract](https://etherscan.io/address/0x251b5F14A825C537ff788604eA1b58e49b70726f#readContract) and the fact that a _Sacred Flame_ is required to burn and only 1112 _Sacred Flames_ exist.

Similar to Forgotten Runes Wizards, there are 6 traits: background, body, head, familiar, prop, and rune.

Also similar to Wizards, Souls traits combine according to the Soul's _affinity_ which is a measure of cohesiveness of the traits.

For comparison, the _Forgotten Runes Wizards_ had:

- about 80 bodies and
- about 120 heads

_Forgotten Souls_ has:

- about 70 bodies and
- about 80 heads

While there are fewer heads in Souls, the collection is also about 1/10th of the size of Wizards.

## Rarity Mechanics

Determining the final rarity of your Soul is impossible to know until the final Sacred Flame has been used.

The rarity of your Soul depends on what your fellow Wizards choose to burn.

Q: If I have pass a rare Wizard through the flame, will I receive a rare Soul?

A: This question cannot be answered

Q: Will my Soul keep the Affinity of my Wizard? (E.g. if I have a "5/5 affinity" Wizard, will I have a "5/5 affinity" Soul?)

A: No. The affinities are near-completely transmuted and the affects of the Flame will not leave affinity untouched.

Q: If I pass a "rare" Wizard through the flame, will I receive a "rare" Soul in return?

A: You will receive a transmutation of your Wizard in most cases, but no Wizard is unaffected by the flame.

## NFT Metadata & On-chain Data

The Forgotten Runes Wizards are [completely encoded on-chain](https://www.forgottenrunes.com/posts/on-chain), _eventually_ Souls will be - **however not at first**.

> This section is a bit technical and mostly of concern to collectors who care about the on-chain encoding of the complete NFT. Feel free to skip this section if that isn't you.

The persistence of _Forgotten Souls_ NFT data will happen in 3 layers:

- Centralized Mint Server - Controlled by [@dotta](https://twitter.com/dotta)
- IPFS Checkpointing
- Full on-chain archiving

Let's discuss why.

### The problem

We want to provide an experience for Souls that is:

- fair to all participants
- does not allow cheating by bots or technical users
- immediate reveal
- as cheap as possible

With Wizards, we were able to put all data on chain after the mint because the entire collection was minted in 28 minutes.

With Souls, **the entire collection may take years** or longer before all Flames are used. Given that 1112 Wizards will be burned - and we can't predict which 1112 ahead of time -- we have to store on-chain in batches.

Obviously we don't want the entire collection to suffer in it's decentralization because some Flames have not been used. Our solution is as follows:

### Centralized mint server

For an initial burn, we use a centralized mint server. This gives us bot-protected because we check that a token was minted before we reveal. This also gives an immediate reveal experience. It's also cheaper than e.g. a Chainlink VRF.

The obvious con here is that there is a centralization aspect which is bad for persistence and requires trust for fairness.

### IPFS Checkpointing

After some Souls have been minted, we will "checkpoint" the collection into IPFS. We've built into the contract the ability to serve the tokens that have been minted from IPFS. [See line 166 here](https://rinkeby.etherscan.io/address/0x95082b505c0752eEf1806aEf2b6b2d55eEa77e4E#code)

IPFS has it's flaws, but it's better than a centralized server for long-term archival.

However for us, that isn't far enough and so:

### Full on-chain archiving

Just like wizards, we will, eventually, put them on chain. Again, the contract is built to support loading the Souls on-chain, in chunks, when enough have been minted and gas is favorable.

### On-chain Summary

So on day one, the on-chain encoding story of Souls is not as strong as Wizards, but we've built an upgrade path to store them on chain in time.

Q: If we are required to trust the a centralized metadata provider, who are we "trusting" exactly?

A: The only two people with access to the pre-reveal metadata are [@dotta](https://twitter.com/dotta) and [Niski](https://twitter.com/niski_iski). The other team members, including Elf etc. do not have access to this data.

## Book of Lore

When you burn a Wizard, a final entry of their burning will be automatically written into the Book of Lore.

Because you are burning the Wizard token **you will no longer be able to write in that Wizard's Lore** -- because you will no longer own that token.

Q: Will there be turnarounds & walkcycles & layer downloads of my Souls?

A: Yes, eventually. The layer downloads will come relatively soon, but the walkcycles for Souls will be several months behind Wizards.

Q: Will Souls be used in the upcoming game in the same way that Wizards are?

A: It depends. A pile of dust will not be of much use there.

# Summary

- The Flames were airdropped for free (we paid gas)

A Collectors Guide to Forgotten Souls


At this event, a Wizard and a Flame may be burned to receive a Forgotten Soul.

Burning a Wizard, however, is Dark Magic which is always risky and unpredictable. If you choose to burn a Wizard, there's a chance you may receive something undesirable.

So choose wisely.

## TL;DR

- 1112 Wizards were airdropped Flames
- Flames are used for Forgotten Souls on All Hallow’s Eve
- Burn a Flame token + a Wizard token for a chance at a Forgotten Soul
- You might receive the Ghost of your Wizard, something more powerful, or something "undesirable"
- You’ll always get an NFT back, but there are no guarantees on _what_ you will get, so there is a risk.
- For the wizards concerned with rate of return, the risk of an “undesirable” result is roughly 1 in 10.
- No time limit on using the flames. We wanted to avoid a gas war + a limited time window and we don’t want people to rush this decision.

## The Sacred Flame

To burn a Wizard will require a Sacred Flame. The Flame itself is also an NFT, which was be airdropped to a limited number of Wizard holders.

Only 1112 Flames will be distributed. There will be no gas war to acquire a Flame: the airdrop will go to the longest holding and most committed Wizards, max one per account.

Flame-holders may choose to use, hold, trade, or sell their Flame, like any other NFT.

There are only a limited number of Flames, but as an individual, there is no limit to the number of Flames you can use, if you hold them. However each Flame can be used only once and the Wizard is burned with it.

While the Burning is scheduled for 🎃 All Hallows' Eve 🎃, there is no urgency on that day as Flames do not extinguish until they are used. There is also no urgency because burning a Wizard is dark and unpredictable magic. With dark magic, there are no guarantees.

## Questions About The Great Burning

**Q:** Does your wizard affect what soul you get?

**A**: Generally yes. What you likely receive is the next phase of your wizard, but there are no guarantees with dark magic.

**Q:** Can the community build utility for the “undesirable” results?

**A:** Yes, of course. Every Forgotten Soul is an ERC721 token that can be used in a permissionless way, like other ERC721 tokens.

**Q:** Can _every_ Wizard be burned? What about the super-rares and uniques?

**A:** There are no Wizards who are able to withstand being affected by a Flame. Every Wizard can pass through the Flame, from the highest to the lowest.

**Q:** Will the Forgotten Souls be on-chain like the Wizards?

**A:** In time. Because there is no time limit for the Forgotten Souls, it isn't possible for the entire collection to be put on-chain due to the fact that **your choices affect the final collection**. That said, we will put the collection on chain as we can.

**Q:** For the undesirables, we have these odds. But what are the odds for other non-ghost results?

**A:** There are ultra-rares in the collection. So you could get a soul/ghost-type, an undesirable, or ultra-rares.

There are four operational Guilds, which are open to _any_ Wizard holder with the requisite skills:

- The Art and Lore Guild
- The Hype Guild
- The Gathering Guild
- The Coding Guild

And there are three Guilds for members who own specific Wizards:

- The Kobald Horde
- The Sect
- The Coven

## The Operational Guilds

For example, the operational guilds help do things like:

- Create art and stories for fellow wizards
- Hire artists for a global, physical street-art (mural) campaign
- Organize live events (like custom D&D campaigns), irl meetups
- Build smart contracts and UIs for organizing The Book of Lore, etc.

The **Art and Lore Guild** helps tell the stories of the Wizards and their world.

The **Hype Guild** faces outward and tells the others about the Wizards.

The **Gathering Guild** faces inward and organizes time to bring us together.

The **Coding Guild** writes the code to make the UI and contracts to interface with the Wizard world.

## Guild Member's Principle

A Guild member is a higher level of responsibility than being a Verified Wizard. A Guild member:

- is helpful to the Wizards around them
- is a doer, a person of action
- assumes the best of their fellow Wizard
- communicates well
- uses their wisdom in making choices for The Cult
- takes the lead

## Structure

The Guilds will be limited to 3 members each to start. In order to let them find their bearings, each Guild will be given a private channel, and they can choose to open it in time.

## Requirements

To qualify for a Guild position, one must be a Verified Wizard. (We may allow unverified collaborators for a time-limited basis when it makes sense, but only Verified Wizards can be full Guild members.)

## The Art and Lore Guild

The Art and Lore Guild is for those who wish to write stories, draw pictures, and create animations about Wizards and their world.

The Art and Lore Guild is good fit for you if you:

- can write stories or poems
- can animate pixels
- can 3D model
- are good with Photoshop, Aseprite, Blender, etc.
- can paint pictures with words

## The Hype Guild

The Hype Guild will be responsible for promotion of the Wizards both online and offline. This includes things like organizing a physical street-art campaign, collaborations with other projects, and organizing merch (shirts, stickers, rugs) etc.

The Hype Guild is a good fit for you if you:

- like getting the word out
- have good taste
- don't mind making phone calls
- can research and rank bids from different vendors
- are organized

## The Gathering Guild

The Gathering Guild will be responsible for organizing live virtual and irl events that help everyone get to know and spend time with one another in a fun and safe setting.

This includes things like hiring a Dungeon Master to run a custom campaign based on our Wizards, organizing Lore telling nights, and organizing in-person events.

The Gathering Guild is a good fit for you if you:

- love creating a sense of belonging
- can coordinate groups of people
- are mindful of **all** types of Wizards who may want to attend
- enjoy crafting delightful experiences for groups of friends

## The Coding Guild

The Coding Guild will be responsible for building the website and smart contracts that let Wizards interact on chain.

This includes things like building The Book of Lore, Forgotten Souls, and organizing community knowledge on the website.

The Coding Guild is a good fit for you if you:

- already know how to program one language at an intermediate language
- want to get experience in working with live mainnet smart contracts
- know React and/or Solidity, to some degree

You don't need to be an expert in Solidity to apply to this Guild - there is quite a lot of front-end React/TypeScript development to be done.

First, you'll want your Wizard broken into it's separate layers, which will likely include the head, body, prop, familiar, and rune.

To get your Wizard's layers, go to forgottenrunes.com. Connect your wallet by clicking the crow.

You must, of course, connect the wallet that is holding your Wizard collection.

Then click on the little hat and staff.

This will give you a pop-up of all the Wizards you own. I, for example, own **Adept Carly of the Wood**, serial #32.

You'll see little icons as the bottom. From left to right, we have share to Twitter, view on OpenSea, and download. Click the download button. You will get a little zip file that contains all the layers. You'll notice the name of the zip file corresponds to the Wizard's serial number, (32 in this case.)

In this zip file you'll see:

The 50 folder has the assets in a 50x50 pixels frame. The 400 folder has them at 400x400 pixels. If you want to do proper pixel art in Aseprite, you'll want to use the assets in folder 50.

Now it's time to get into Aseprite. If you don't own it, it's only $19.99 [from this website](https://www.aseprite.org)

If you are an aspiring pixel artist, I highly recommend it. It's easy to learn and there are many tutorials on Youtube on how to use it. In fact, one of my favorite pixel artist [Youtubers is Brandon James Greer](https://www.youtube.com/c/BJGpixel/videos).

This guide is not intended to be an entire course on Aseprite, nor animation, it's only going to show you how to get your Wizard layers into the program.

So open Aseprite and go to `File > New`

Set your document to these settings.

Now, there's actually not a super streamlined way to get all these layers into Aseprite. If anyone knows a better way, please let me know, but here's my method:

1. Drag and drop the body file into Aseprite. Instead of putting that body image into the document you just created, you'll notice Aseprite actually makes a whole new tab!

   Ok so now you can actually just close that first document you made (the tab labeled Sprite-001) You don't need it!

   Back in the body file, double click the Layer and rename it Body

2. Next, drag and drop the head image on top of the body. Again, a whole new tab!!

3. Now here's the trick- click on the little black dot on the head layer. Make sure it's highlighted and go to `Edit > Copy`. Then go back to the Body tab. Make a New Layer above the Body layer and rename it Head. Now, click in the little square in the Head layer, and go to `Edit > Paste`. The head should pop right into place!

   Now you can close that tab that holds only the head.

4. Just reapeat those steps for every remaining part (prop, familiar, rune). The point is to gather all the parts into one Aseprite file.

**Secret Wizard Tip #1**
There is another way to get the Wizards parts if you don't want to connect your MetaMask. Simply put http://nftz.forgottenrunes.com/wizard/32.zip into the URL, but replace 32 with whichever serial number of the corresponding Wizard you want to access. But remember, it is considered good form to be sure you have the permission of the Wizard owner before using the parts of any Wizard.

**Secret Wizard Tip #2**
You don't have to use Aseprite! Photoshop also works quite well for image editing. In fact you can use any image editor you want. Dragging layers into these other programs is much easier. In some cases, the folder containing the 400x400 parts may be better for your use.

Below is some generalized lore about each class, but remember, your Forgotten Runes character is always your own. ### The Liches

The Aristocracy of the Undead, the gentry of the Nightmare Dominion. If evil exists, it is embodied in the Liches. They take great pride in their noble titles like Duke, Despot, Baron and Marquis. The Liches know how to take and hold power, and do so by any means necessary. If their more subtle methods of political intrigue and corruption do not suffice, they can always send forth their armies of Wraiths.

### The Wraiths

The Wraiths are the cursed warriors of the Undead Armies. They are Captains, Knights, Deacons, and Devouts. The Warriors of the living know of no method for killing wraiths.

### The Zombies

Mindless, rotting wanderers anchored to the earthly plane. Not dead, not alive, but forever hungry. Their endless journey has no meaning, unless the insatiable search to devour living flesh has meaning.

### The Revenants

Reanimated corpses, similar to zombies, but with more awareness. Some consider revenants nothing more than the lich underclass. They are beings of vice, enslaved to their gluttonous desire for blood and flesh.

### Ghouls

The bloodlust and hunger of revenants and zombies is great, but it is nothing compared to the Ghouls. They are beings of unparalleled debauchery. They engorge themselves with reckless abandon, drunk on impropriety and wanton ways. Ghouls are too vulgar even for places like Goblin Town, and are often exiled to Nasty Town.

### Spectres

As other Souls wander the earthly plane, there are some beings who occupy more amorphous dimensions. The Spectres come and go as they please, materializing wherever they wish. They are made of spiritual substances like Shade, Ectoplasm, and Ether. There is rumored to even be one made of fire itself.

### Phantasms

Like Specteres, Phantasms live on the immaterial plane. They are creatures of the Void itself, and seem totally unconcerned with the affairs of the Living.

### Poltergeists

Ghosts in the shell, beings that seem to live in the machine realm. Technology is often plagued by poltergeists, with glitches being referred to as “kissed by a Poltergeist”

We have also seen some transmutations on the familiars, for if a Wizard steps to a flame, so must they.

But the Burn also returned some new familiars to the Runiverse. We’ve seen some [resurrected beasts](https://opensea.io/collection/forgottensouls?search[stringTraits][0][name]=familiar&search[stringTraits][0][values][0]=Resurrected%20Smilodon%20Kitten&search[stringTraits][0][values][1]=Resurrected%20Thylacine&search[stringTraits][0][values][2]=Resurrected%20Dodo) such as the dodo, a thylacine, and a smilodon kitten!

It also seems, to the delight of many, that Wizards who brought eggs through the fire returned with [those eggs hatched](https://opensea.io/collection/forgottensouls?search[stringTraits][0][name]=prop&search[stringTraits][0][values][0]=Platypus%20hatchling&search[stringTraits][0][values][1]=Cockatrice%20hatchling&search[stringTraits][0][values][2]=Dragon%20hatchling). We’ve seen baby cockatrices, dragon hatchlings, and platypuses!

### The Soul Rune

There is also the addition of a new Rune: [The Rune of Souls](https://opensea.io/collection/forgottensouls?search[stringTraits][0][name]=rune&search[stringTraits][0][values][0]=Rune%20of%20Souls). The power and significance of the Soul Rune has yet to be discovered...

### Undesirables

We've seen some so-called “undesirable” outcomes in the Burn. Things like coffins, piles of ash, and flowers on graves. But perhaps the most peculiar are the jelly donuts?!
If you decide you do not want to risk the chance of getting an undesirable outcome, you are free to hold or sell your flame. But it is worth remembering that if you get an “undesirable” outcome, these events are actually more rare…

### Names and Locations

The only thing that remains of a transmuted Wizard is their first name. Their titles and locations do not survive the burn, and through this we have learned of many new places in the Runiverse. Some of these places are of great and terrible power, like the Nightmare Dominion, the Dread Tower, and Torment Manor. Some are of plague and sickness, like the Bubonic Beaches, the Majestic Filth, the Slime Pits. And there are some places that merely house vulgar filth, like Nasty Town, Gross Gorge, and the Nether Regions.

## Commissioning Your Own Mural

Want to see a mural in your own city? Here are the instructions how.

Wizards who live in the same city sometimes team up to coordinate and share funds. Feel free to find other Wizards in your area who might want to collaborate on making this happen - and we'll add your mural to this page!

**Overview**

Getting a Mural done is relatively simple: find an artist, describe what you want in detail, pay them, and wait.

Cost: between $1,000-$5,000  
Timeline: About an hour of prep, a few weeks of waiting

# Instructions:

### 1. Decide Your Wizard(s)

The first thing is to decide which Wizards you're going to have painted.

For our initial set of murals that we commissioned, we asked for two murals:

1. A large 10 foot by 10 foot of a single Wizard and
2. A 3 foot tall by 10 foot wide of three Wizards in a row

> This generally cost about $5,000 depending on the city, but sometimes you can get someone to do for free or the cost of the paint, depending.

We recommend requesting that the artist paint the Wizard name and number (and probably the URL to where folks can learn more.)

For the font, we historically used [`Alagard` which you can find here](https://www.dafont.com/alagard.font).

You can get a high-res version of your Wizard with the following URL, replacing `<wizardNum>` with your Wizard's serial number:

### 2. Finding a Location (optional)

If you own or know of a location that would be a good fit, then recommend that location to your artist.

> Wizards are good citizens. While we'd love to see a Wizard on any wall, it's important that the owner of the property consents to a mural being painted on their property. If you're unsure, just ask! Be sure to show them a picture - it makes it easier if they know what they're getting into.

That said, if you don't know of a good location, a paid artist will generally include finding one in their price. So even if you don't know of a location, they should find one for you.

### 3. Finding an Artist

Now you need to find an artist, we found the most success on [Thumbtack](https://www.thumbtack.com/)

Head over to Thumbtack, type in "Muralist" and type in the zip code of your city and then it will give you a list of Artists for hire near that zip code. Easy.

Now, reach out to **several** artists with instructions of what we want done.

> We recommend reaching out to several because some will be busy, prices will vary a lot, and it can all take time. It's always good to have options.

When you make your initial contact, here's a template you can use to make the initial ask:

> Hi **\_**, I saw your work on Thumbtack and love your work. if you are currently accepting commisioned projects, I would love to get a quote on reproducing a 10 foot x 10 foot mural of a pixel-art Wizard NFT that I own. Is this something you'd be able to help me with?
>
> (attach the image of the Wizard above)

### 4. Clarifying What You Want

If the artist responds and is interested, you need to do two things:

1. Make sure they understand the level of quality we're expecting and
2. Find out details of the paint

**Quality specifications**

Tell the artist the following:

> For this mural, it's pixel art. So it's important to us that you replicate this image as closely as possible. Keeping the pixel art style means that we need to have a sharp, consistent grid. And you don't need to stylize it or add to it - just try to keep the colors as close as you can.

And you need to:

**Ask the following questions**

- How much is it going to cost, all in?
- Where exactly is it going to be located?
- When will it be complete?
- How long do you expect it to remain (before being painted over)?

Location, location, location. The better the location, the higher the price. But you want to make sure you're going to be happy with where the mural is.

Also **be careful of artist-only alleyways**. There are places where all of the artists go to paint and these often get painted over within days! If you're paying good money you want at least a nominal guarantee that

1. folks will see it and
2. it will last for weeks/months.

... but if you don't ask the muralist they won't necessarily tell you above. So just ask.

### 5. Finalizing the Deal

Once you found an Artist that fits what you are looking for, regarding price and style, the next step will be to pay them, typically they will ask for 50% of the total price first (for materials and acquiring the wall) and once they have finished and you have approved of the work, you will pay the other 50%.

### Share Images and Location

After a few weeks, you'll have a beautiful Wizard on the Wall. Every Wizard around is going to want to come by and take a picture.

# Provenance: Encoded Fully On-Chain

Our Wizards are fully encoded on-chain. This includes pixels of the image, names, and traits. The result is that the entire collection is completely reproducible rom on-chain data.

Most NFT projects merely store their images on IPFS, and the owners of such NFTs only hold a pointer to that image. The result is that, in these projects, if at any point the images are not hosted by anyone, they will disappear. Not so with us.

The provenance of the Wizard images and data are recorded wholly within the Ethereum blockchain, attached to our [custom contract](https://etherscan.io/address/0x521f9c7505005cfa19a8e5786a9c3c9c9f5e6f42). Which means ownership of a Wizard, and the image itself, is fully on-chain.

This means that they do not depend on any external or centralized hosting service to exist.

In short, your Wizard is 100% decentralized and will live forever on the Ethereum blockchain.

This post is for the technically minded who wish to understand _how_ this encoding works and how to retrieve the NFTs from on-chain data.

## tl;dr How to Re-create Any Wizard

If you'd like to re-create your Wizard(s) entirely from on-chain data, you can run the following commands:

## How the Storage Works - transaction calldata

Typically when you store data in a smart contract, that data is expensive. The typical way of storing data is by using `SSTORE`, which is one of the most expensive operations a smart contract can use because it stores data to be accessible by other smart contracts.

For Wizards, we use a "trick" of packing data into a transaction's calldata. Because all transactions [must have their arguments persisted](https://ethresear.ch/t/clarification-on-how-calldata-persists-on-the-blockchain-and-how-optimistic-rollups-use-it/8136/5) we can use this area for a storage that is much, much cheaper than `SSTORE`

## Investigating `tokenURI` and `uploadWizardsImage`

Wizards are an ERC721 Standard token. That means they have a `tokenURI` method, which you can find on our [contract](https://etherscan.io/address/0x521f9c7505005cfa19a8e5786a9c3c9c9f5e6f42#readContract).

If you use this method you will see an IPFS URL. "Wait", you might be asking, "you said the Wizards are stored on chain?" That's true, but we use an IPFS URL as a mirror for convenience and interoperability with off-chain tools like OpenSea. Continue reading and we'll explain.

If you inspect the [code](https://etherscan.io/address/0x521f9c7505005cfa19a8e5786a9c3c9c9f5e6f42#code) you will see that there are two methods:

- `uploadWizardsImage(bytes calldata s)`
- `uploadWizardsAttributes(bytes calldata s)`

But the function implementations are empty! That's because we aren't using the storage _in_ the contract, but rather the _persistence of the transaction calldata_.

## Encoding the Wizards

Even though we're using the calldata for storing the images and traits, we don't upload all 10,000 images individually. Because the Wizards are made up of _parts_, we encode the 341 parts in a single image grid and upload that image, along with a pairing of wizard attributes to decode it.

The code can be found in [the Decoder Crystal](https://opensea.io/assets/0x2d00d68bf8bc14d139b4dcea5fb7ce0a42e09c86/0).

We also used a **limited palette of about 180 colors** for the entire collection. Because of this limited number of colors are are able to to use _png8_ (8 bits per pixel) instead of _png32_ (32 bits per pixel) and then we hex-encode that image. This allows us to fit the images for the entire collection into a single transaction.

For the traits, we use the [BSON](https://bsonspec.org/) encoding scheme. The details can be found in the code, which also can be found on-chain, by using the commands above.

## Trade-offs

## Use of an IPFS Mirror

We host a mirror of our images and data on IPFS and centralized services. This is only a mirror and is for convenience of tools like OpenSea and not requirement for the provenance or persistence of the Wizards.

An improvement might be to render `<svg>` tags within the Solidity. That said, this approach gives us both the ease-of-use of IPFS and durability of the blockchain

## Trait Composability

Probably the biggest shortcoming of this approach is that the traits, while readable on-chain, are not in SSTORE, which means **they aren't readable by other smart contracts**. While this isn't a big problem for the permanent provenance of a collectable NFT, but if we want to compose the traits with other smart contracts (such as games), we **do** want the individual traits to be readable on-chain.

On a crisp December 24th, 2021 snow fell on the secret tower, a rumble in the distance. Then a whinny. From the Elysian Fields, a herd of 567 ponies appeared in the Forgotten Runiverse.

The minting was free (+gas) for anyone who received a merch box or held a Wizard (or Soul) that had Lore (details below).

## About the Elysian Fields Collection

There are 567 Ponies comprised of 52 traits (plus Runes). During minting, the images and metadata are hosted but after minting the Ponies will be stored **completely on-chain** just like the Wizards.

## Criteria for Receiving a Pony

In Forgotten Runes, we eschew the idea that a Wizard's _traits_ alone give them their value. Each Wizard has a _story_ to be told and Wizard holders contribute to that story by sharing it through derivative art, poems, songs, paintings, murals, storyboards, animations, sculpture, and every possible art form.

"Like Wizard, Buy Wizard" encapsulates the idea that it's important to focus on a wizard you vibe with. Worry less about _rarity_ and more about if you feel a personal connection.

## "Lore not Floor"

Instead with Wizards, we emphasize the _Lore_. The stories that we tell let every individual Wizard contribute to the collaborative Legendarium. Every single Wizard can contribute, regardless of how skilled you are.

Principles of The Forgotten Runes Wizard's Cult


On July 30th, at roughly 8:30 am, a crow perched upon the Secret Tower, and the Tower came alive. Within a frenzied timespan of 20 minutes, our community had summoned all ten thousand Wizards, and the Secret Tower closed once again. It was an historic moment in NFT history, and our team suddenly realized we had become Cult leaders, with a Discord full of passionate Wizards. Over the following weeks, we studiously knocked off each item on our Roadmap 1.0, and with every milestone our ambitions grew larger.

Roadmap 1.0 is nearly complete. We have decided to release Roadmap 2.0, which more accurately reflects our larger ambitions:

The order of these items is in flux. We may complete these milestones in a slightly different order than what is presented, but we think it’s a pretty good estimation.

And for those wondering, the commercial rights milestone will be clearly spelled out in a near future blog post. And finally, there will be many other surprises along the way. This Roadmap only covers a few of the major milestones.

Let’s discuss these one by one

## All Wizard holders will receive full turnarounds for every Wizard they own.

Currently, our Wizards exist as beautiful static images minted as NFTs. But FR Wizards are meant for so much more...

Elf is currently undertaking the arduous task of drawing the front, side, and back views of every single head, body, and familiar in the collection. This equates to roughly 240 pieces of art being tripled, for a total of 720 new sprites! Then we will take these parts and assemble them in the exact combinations of our 10k collection.

This means, as a Wizard holder, you will receive the front, right side, back, and left side of your Wizard and your Wizard’s familiar. These turnarounds will not apply to spells, items, staffs, or runes.

It’s a lot to take on, but Elf is roughly half way through. So why are we doing this?

## Wizards will be deployable into other metaverses with full walk cycles

If you want your Wizard to walk around in a metaverse, they will need to walk in all directions!

We will use these turnarounds to extract walk cycles, emotes, battle stances, and other poses required for full interaction in the metaverse.

We are talking to many partners about allowing Wizards to walk freely in other metas. Additionally, we are making moves to create our own meta based on the current map of the Forgotten Runes world.

This meta will be a place for Wizards to socialize, adventure, and battle monsters. There is so much to say about this meta, but more details will need to wait for a future blog post.

Our Cult members have been making AMAZING art and animations with their Wizards and sharing them on social media. With these new sprites, our holders will be able to expand their artistic expressions and show Wizards doing things from any angle!

## The Forgotten Runes Book of Lore

In addition to sprites, probably the most exciting development is the Book of Lore. This device will be a groundbreaking feature unique to Forgotten Runes, something no other NFT project has.

Since launch, our holders have been creating a staggering amount of artwork, animation, stories, poems, and other media expressions to supplement their Wizards. They have been building out their characters, bringing life to them. We knew this lore development needed to be saved on the blockchain, so that it could be preserved forever along with the Wizards themselves. Hence, the Forgotten Runes Book of Lore.

This Book will be an online compendium where any Wizard holder can attach art, stories, poems, or any NFT artifact to Wizards they own. Over time, we imagine this tome will become a massive wealth of information detailing the biographical history of each Wizard. We believe that a Wizard with well developed lore can become a legendary NFT.

## The Great Burning

In the near future, The Secret Tower on our website will undergo a subtle transformation. Wizard holders will have the opportunity to commit the unspeakable act of burning their Wizard!!! This act, while incredibly risky, will destroy the Wizard but may potentially return a mysterious Ghost Wizard. The exact details of the Great Burning have yet to be revealed, but for those who choose to take part in this even, be warned:

## FRWC comic book issue #1 released

The Forgotten Runes comic book will be one of the earliest ways the community will learn about the larger metanarrative. With approximately 20 pages of spellbinding lore, readers will learn about the magic system, the political intrigue, and several characters in this seminal issue.

Perhaps one of the things we are most excited about is the animated version of the Forgotten Runes Wizards. We are currently in talks with a few animation studios in Los Angeles, and one in particular seems very promising. We look forward to sharing more details about this in the coming months ahead.

## Forgotten Runes Warrior's Guild

When the time is right, and only then, we intend a companion Warrior drop to the Wizards. But why Warriors?

Every good book, film, and video game in the Fantasy genre needs this power balance of the brains (Wizards) and the brawn (Warriors). Indeed, it is an established trope: Wizards & Warriors, Swords & Sorcery, Might & Magic.

We believe this dynamic will be crucial in our own books, animations, and games. If we have a large metaverse of 10k Wizards, we will need other power dynamics to cooperate with or to challenge them!
Though Warriors will arrive much later, we see Wizards as the emissaries to our universe.

The Wizards will shape this world in its nascent creation. In due time, they will be long established in this world- settled in Hedge Wizard Wood, populated in Calista’s Citadel, and fortified in the Blue Wizard Bastion. They will be well learned in the Forgotten Runes. Their power and wisdom will pervade across the land.

But even the very wise cannot see all ends...

The Sacred Flame


On July 30th, at roughly 8:30 am, a crow perched upon the Secret Tower, and the Tower came alive. Within a frenzied timespan of 20 minutes, our community had summoned all ten thousand Wizards, and the Secret Tower closed once again.

There are 10,000 unique Wizard NFTs. The Summoning began on [Ethereum block 12736300](https://etherscan.io/block/countdown/12736300), which was on June 30th, 2021.

The Wizards are encoded fully on-chain. The image of each Wizard is 50x50 pixels, scaled to 400x400. Each Wizard has a unique name and configuration of traits.

Each wizard was summoned for 0.07 ETH, with a maximum of 12 summoned per transaction.

# Tokenomics and Incentivized Wizards

There are 10,000 unique Wizards.

The first 80 were minted directly by the team. From of those 80, about 30 were given away for free for marketing and friends and the remaining 50 will be transferred to the team.

## What is a "Spritesheet"?

Lore is attached to a specific Wizard token. While **anyone can read the Book**, only _Wizard holders_ can write Lore.

## Writing Lore in the Editor

When you write Lore in the editor you can:

- control some formatting
- upload images
- background-color
- toggle NSFW

### Lore Formatting

You can add formatting by typing _shortcuts_ as you would in e.g. Discord. For example:

- A heading with `#` as in: `# Heading 1`
- A smaller heading with `##` as in `## Heading 2`
- **Bold** text with `**bold text here**`
- _Italic_ text with `_italic text here_`

### Lore Images

To upload images:

- Download the image you want to your computer or desktop and
- **Drag the image into the Lore editor**

You can upload multiple images and intersperse them with text. Or you can have Lore which is simply a single image. It's up to you.

### Background Color

You can change the background color of your Lore using the color picker.

### Toggle NSFW

Lore is enjoyed by Wizards of all ages across many cultures - however, we recognize that not all actions of all Wizards in the universe may be suitable for minors at all times.

We ask that, as a courtesy to fellow Wizards, you mark NSFW content. While we realize what is NSFW varies across cultures, a good rule of thumb is to enable this if the Lore ought not to be seen by minors.

> NOTE: At this time, the website at `forgottenrunes.com` will not display NSFW content, however, it is still written to chain and stored as any other Lore. This website and code are completely open-source.

## The Rules of Lore

- Lore can only be written about a Wizard by the account that holds that specific Wizard
- Lore can be _updated_ by:
  - The account that holds a specific Wizard...
  - ONLY IF they _also_ created that specific Lore

Which means you're free to update the Lore of Wizards you own while you own it. But if you transfer that Wizard away, the new owner **cannot** change the previous Lore - and neither can you.

### Struck Lore

Lore can never be deleted, however, Lore can be _Struck_ from the record. If Lore is Struck, it is a public symbol that the Lore in question is considered Anathema by the Cult. We disavow it as part of our culture and history.

Lore that includes, but is not limited to, hateful content, unnecessarily grotesque, irrelevant sexual content and [other sorts of content listed here](https://support.google.com/docs/answer/148505) will be Struck.

> Any IPFS records of Struck Lore will not be pinned by Forgotten Runes.

The NSFW flag is a courtesy and NSFW content may, in many cases, be acceptable, whereas Struck Lore is a strong statement - and hopefully rare occurrence - that the community completely disavows the Lore.

## The Lore Master

There is a special role of the Lore Master. The Lore Master holds the following powers:

- ✅ The ability to add (or remove) token contracts that may have new Lore written about them
- ✅ The ability to mark any Lore as NSFW
- ✅ The ability to Strike any Lore

The Lore Master may not:

- ❌ Add Lore to any Wizard
- ❌ Update Lore of any Wizard
- ❌ Delete Lore of any Wizard

> The Lore Master keys are currently held by the Forgotten Runes Deployer (co-controlled by Elf & Dotta). The plan is to eventually turn the Lore Master keys over to the community at the appropriate time.

## FAQ

**Q:** Is my Lore stored "on-chain"?

**A:** Partially. The Lore contents (images, stories) are stored on IPFS, like most other NFTs. The record of the Lore - and a pointer to IPFS - is stored on-chain.

**Q:** Where is the Book of Lore contract?

**A:** The mainnet address of the Book of Lore is [`0x4218948d1da133cf4b0758639a8c065dbdccb2bb`, found here](https://etherscan.io/address/0x4218948d1da133cf4b0758639a8c065dbdccb2bb#code)

**Q:** Does it cost gas?

**A:** Yes. The contract ensures that only Wizard holders may write new Lore and it writes it permanently on-chain, so it does cost gas. The gas cost is almost exactly the same as a swap on Sushiswap (about 100k gas, which is about $22 at 50 Gwei at current prices).

**Q:** Is _The Book of Lore_ decentralized?

**A:** Yes. Writing to the Book is controlled by the smart contract at `0x421` and it cannot be disabled. All Wizard holders may write to this Book within the parameters outlined above. Currently, the website is hosted at `forgottenrunes.com` and The Creators _pin_ (ensure persistence of) the IPFS files of non-struck Lore, however, anyone else may pin whatever files they choose.

**Q:** How should I write my Lore?

**A:** Join the Discord and we'll help you think through this!

**Q:** Can I update my Lore?

**A:** Yes **if** you originally created it _and_ you still hold the Wizard. However, the editing interface has not been created as of 9/21. Editing will be shipped in Q4 2021.

**Q:** What about _Forgotten Souls_, _Forgotten Runes Warriors_, etc.?

**A:** The Book will support their stories to be told.
