Chronomancer Eden of the Cosmos (#9555)

Ask for what you don't want

Chronomancer Eden sat waiting in a traditional kobold pub. Arch-Magician Alatar of the Realm was late as usual. He always did this, making sure that he was never so late it was worth the risk and effort for his chronomancer guest to go back in time and change his arrival point but always just late enough to annoy Eden. Still what could you expect from a magician who worked as a thief.

Realistically Eden knew he was probably already there, using a glamour spell to disguise himself as someone else, chuckling to himself at Eden getting frustrated. Eden sat and waited patiently until Alatar walked up behind him and dropped the purple book of chaos right onto the table with a loud bang.

Pulling up the chair opposite Alatar enquired as to Eden’s health but Eden was already opening the book. Rapidly skipping page after page, he stopped suddenly and went very pale before carefully ripping a single page out of the priceless book and returning it to the table along with a huge pouch of gold coins.

Alatar looked at him quizzically as Eden started to push his chair back and stand up to leave.

‘I don’t understand, I thought you needed the book? Its priceless’

'Just that page, I couldn’t risk asking them for it as the minute I did they would read it. I couldn’t change anything about the book in the earlier part of the timeline as it has protected the wizards in the Purple Wizard Pavilion through a dangerous part of the timeline and messing with that particular part could be catastrophic for the Chronomancers. This was my only choice.'

‘But, but what do you want me to do’

Eden paused at the question and thought about it for the first time.

‘It doesn't really matter at this point, there is every chance this part of the timeline will just be wiped clean one way or another but if I was you, and I knew everything that I know, I would just give it back and pretend it was a show of power. Ask for something like a purple wizard seat on the council, they will never give it but they might believe that was all it was when you took it’

And with that he turned and walked out the door into the bright light outside. Leaving a rich but confused Alatar to ponder his fate.

First things first, but not in that order

Three of the four white hat wizards were sat at the table talking over each other. Protected by the most powerful magical shield they could create, one that glowed with ever shifting white runes burning with power, they were not at all surprised when Chronomancer Eden appeared just behind the empty chair they had left for him.

In one action he sat down, pulled out of his inside pocket a folded piece of paper and threw it onto the table while giving a loud sigh.

The two white wizards directly opposite him grabbed for the paper at the same time, while the one nearest just asked ‘and’.

‘Yes they did trap it after it broke through but at great cost. That page covers the spell they used, it’s not one you would want to use or in any event be near anyone using though’

The white wizard that hadn’t moved yet nodded slowly. He knew that whatever worked last time wouldn’t work this time, but he hadn’t stopped them from investigating and figuring that out. Anyway he had a plan. An insane plan where the cure may be worse than the disease, but a plan none the less.

As the others started arguing over what to do next he conjured up a viewer portal in mid air. In it Shadow Mage Shukri of the Wood, an entity that had no right physically existing in the Runiverse, was slowly walking through a forest holding a staff. The staff was clearly causing the viewer portal trying to display it considerable difficulties. It constantly looked out of focus, giving off waves that appeared to cause similar distortions in the surrounding environment. The others paused, confused by the unexpected manifestation.

‘We know eventually the forces we are fighting will pass through the Battle Mage Mountains and get access to Chronomancer magic. When they do the ancient impenetrable prison will no longer deserve its name. This time the forces which wish to destroy causality will be stronger and the magic used to trick them last time will not work. We need to fight fire with fire’

Chronomancer Eden felt a chill run up his spine. The others had not caught up yet but he knew what the mad white wizard was planning, bringing the magic of the dream world directly into the Runiverse to fight against the force trapped behind the event horizon was insanely brilliant, but with the focus on the insane part.

There was no record of two entities, both not reliant on causality, fighting each other but that was probably more a function of the number of surviving bystanders who were left and able to write about it afterwards then anything else…..
