Summoner David of the Ice

Summoner David of the Ice lived on the edge of the Northern ice sheet. As a former professor he had spent many years teaching at different cities across the Runiverse before moving up to the top of the continent.

His house was on the edge of the ice as it started to become tundra. Tourists who visited always commented on how beautiful the river that ran past his house was, it sparkled from the multicolour crystals it contained. He was just down river from the entrance to the famous crystal caves. Kept company by his friendly owl they talked for hours about everything from politics and science through to the philosophy of magic.

On exactly the other side of the planet, at the South Pole, was the Tower at the End of the World. There many watchful eyes were waiting, for what no one quite agreed on, but it was clear to everyone that there wasn’t any similar structure at the North Pole.

This was not entirely true, there was in fact a symmetrical tower however due to geological movements the tower was now under water. Magically protected it still maintained its own atmosphere and ecosystem. This tower was under the protection of forces who considered themselves as acting in the interests of the wider citizens of the Runiverse.

It’s hard to tell if this is correct from the fact that in order to keep the secret anyone who tried to visit the tower under the sea at the North Pole is killed by a giant one eyed kraken.

It wasn’t always one eyed, a long time ago a young student had visited the natural habitat of the kraken and cast a spell on it, linking a large magical crystal orb to one of the giant creatures eyes and forming a link that allowed the wizard to control it.

This kind of magical control extracts a price and it became in some ways a curse for Summoner David. The kraken used the link to draw down all the rest of his magic leaving him with only that single spell to his name.

The wizards that asked him to guard the Northern Tower were happy with the arrangement, and Summoner David had made peace with the situation but no one had asked the kraken. While not intelligent in the normal sense, something in its dreams was helping it to realise the crystal on the other side of the spell was trapping it there. Every day after a night dreaming of crystals and impossible dragons it searched for a second crystal in quantum sync with the first that would open Summoner David’s mind directly to the kraken.

Each time the kraken tried to dig a bit deeper under the crystal caves searching for the one crystal that would help set it free, it let loose some more of those crystal fragments into the river.

Each time it made the river just that little bit more pretty for Summoner David to look at in the evening, he was blissfully unaware of how much closer the Kraken was getting to being free and how close he was to becoming its puppet.

Until one day Summoner David woke up and the river didn’t have any crystal fragments in it at all…….
