Null Mage Drusilla of the Waste

The Betrayal

As a child Drusilla grew up in a mansion near Vampyre Castle. Her father was a Vampyre and mother a Vamp, a distinction given to vampires who can use magic. For years vampiric wizards ruled the Vampyre Mists but as the years passed many of them began to focus on their own individual goals and desires rather than get involved with the political affairs of vampire society. There are rumors that the Vampyre and Vamps who are more heavily involved with overseeing the Vampyre Mists have secret meetings underneath Vampyre Castle during the Vampyre Mist Ball, an extravagant yearly event held for the vampire aristocrats and elites. These rumors however have never been officially substantiated.

When Drusilla was ten she went to her fist Vampyre Mist Ball with her parents. On their way back home from the ball they noticed the fog was not nearly as dense as it should be and the sounds you would normally hear behind the mist was different. Various creatures began to appear from the darkness but instead of fighting each other it appeared they were being controlled and working together to surround them. Normally the combined magic abilities of Drusilla’s parents would be able to deal with this threat but for some reason their magical attacks were not as powerful as they should be. They both came to the realization that at some point during the ball someone must have put something in their drinks causing their magic to be weakened. With no other options Drusilla and her parents ran but they could hear the creatures catching up to them. Her parents looked at each other and after giving her a brief hug shoved her through a portal that her father opened behind her. As the portal closed the last memory she had of her parents were their smiles.

The Desert Tribe in the Waste

Still stunned at what just happened Drusilla sat on the ground crying. Scared and alone she had no idea where she was or what to do next. All she knew was her father’s portal sent her somewhere that was very hot and barren for miles. Fortunately for Drusilla she is a Vamp who is resistant to the sun but unlike her parents who were both exceptional wizards Drusilla was considered an underachiever who showed little promise at using magic. With no magical way to help herself in this situation she began to walk in hopes to find some type of water or shelter. As she walked she could feel the thirst and fatigue overtaking her. Every so often she would see images of her parents telling her not to give up and to one day avenge their family’s betrayal. She knew it was probably the heat or dehydration causing her to see these mirages but this fueled her will to keep going.

All of a sudden Drusilla saw a group of people gathered together in the distance. At first she thought it was a hallucination but as she got closer she could hear them speaking with each other. Asking complete strangers from an unknown area for help would be dangerous but these were desperate times. As Drusilla stumbled towards the group she could feel herself about to pass out. Before she could even ask for help she lost consciousness and fell face first in the sand.

When Drusilla woke up she was surprised to see that these people had taken care of her while she was unconscious. She learned that they were a part of a nomadic tribe that survived by making underground settlements in the sand around watering holes. They told her that she was in the Waste, an area that Drusilla vaguely remembered learning about in school. The heads of the tribe began asking her various questions and she could tell they had never seen a Vamp before. Considering the preconceived notion many have towards vampires Drusilla found it a bit peculiar that they did not appear to be afraid of her. She quickly learned that those who live in the Waste have grown used to seeing all manner of people and creatures and in order to survive it was best for people to work together. This type of togetherness and community was foreign to Drusilla who was used to seeing her parents and other vampire elites doing whatever it takes to stay in power or gain more. She decided to contribute to their group until a better opportunity presented itself.

Travel to Dread Tower

A better opportunity to leave the tribe never materialized and Drusilla developed a certain kinship with these people. For the next few years she learned how to survive in the Waste and although she never officially joined their tribe they still treated her as one of their own. One day she and other members of the tribe were out searching for potential new settlements when they were attacked by some sort of creature they never seen before. After a ferocious battle the creature was defeated but her closest friend in the tribe was bitten and looked to be poisoned. They took her back to the main camp but none of their remedies for poison seemed to be working. Drusilla looked closer and could tell it was some type of magical curse. Seeing her friend die gave Drusilla the same helpless feeling she felt when she last saw her parents. Drusilla grabbed her friend's hand and apologized to her for not being stronger. All of a sudden a dark aura began to surround the two of them and the poison began to subside. Her friend was completely healed and no one could figure out what just happened.

Drusilla replayed this event in her mind for days and she somehow felt different now but could not figure out why. She believed what attacked them may have come from somewhere near the Dark Tower a place known for its dark magic and sinister creatures. Even if she was wrong she knew she would need to go somewhere where she could potentially find other magic users who may be able to provide answers. It was not foreign to have wizards come to the Waste in search of whatever secrets or adventures the area may have to offer but actually coming across one in person was not very common. More than likely any wizard brave or foolish enough to adventure in the Waste would more than likely be drawn to the Dread Tower. The members of the tribe tried to convince Drusilla not to go but she had already made up her mind. Knowing that there was a chance she may not return from this journey Drusilla made sure to thank the tribes people for all they had done for her all these years. After saying her final goodbyes she went off into the desert towards the Dread Tower.

Close to two years had passed and there was no word from anyone regarding Drusilla since she left. Many believed she either died traveling to the Dread Tower or something in the tower itself may have taken her. Then one night Drusilla seemed to just appear out of the shadows. The tribe was overjoyed to see her still alive and wanted to celebrate her return. Drusilla began telling them that she now had the power and the tools to avenge her parents and her next goal was to figure out a way to get back to the Vampyre Mist. The tribe could tell that the journey to the Dark Tower had changed her. The Drusilla of the Waste that they knew was feared to be gone.
