Chapter 1: Humble Beginnings

Nassif was born in the arid expanse known as The Sand, a region where survival amidst the harsh climate poses a significant challenge. From a young age, Nassif learned the essential skills required for desert life: traversing the dunes safely, trapping wildlife, and sourcing water. Accompanied by his father, Nassif would set traps for desert mice and snakes, while his mother took him on journeys to the northwestern river, extending from the Lake of Lanterns, to gather water for the family. It was during these excursions that his passion for adventure and exploration began to take root.

Each day presented new challenges—finding sufficient food, navigating the perilous journey for water, and enduring the relentless desert heat. Nassif's family resided in a small cave, which provided crucial protection and shade in an otherwise harsh and barren environment. Although caves were rare in the desert, they offered natural shelter from the sun and protection against sandstorms, making them ideal for habitation.

As Nassif's fascination with travel and adventure grew, he began to question whether this harsh existence was all that the Runiverse had to offer. The routine of struggling for basic necessities and retreating to the cave each night seemed increasingly insufficient. His parents, accustomed to this life since birth, were resigned to their circumstances. However, when Nassif expressed his desire for something more and his belief that the Runiverse had greater opportunities in store for him, his parents, though saddened, understood the necessity of his journey.

In preparation for his departure, Nassif worked alongside his parents to gather additional supplies, including extra water and provisions. He meticulously prepared himself for the unknown challenges that lay ahead, ensuring he was well-equipped for his journey. One day, while lying in the sand with his father to monitor a trap, they spotted a rare sand cat—an elusive creature adept at blending into the dunes. His father, recognizing the value of the catch, whispered, “Nass, it looks like we’re eating well tonight,” as the cat approached the trap. Although Nassif typically accepted such captures as necessary for survival, he felt a profound sense of unease about trapping this particular animal, sensing its unique dignity.

At the crucial moment, Nassif intervened, shouting, “Father, no!” Startled, the sand cat swiftly vanished into the desert. His father, dismayed and frustrated, questioned Nassif’s decision, emphasizing the missed opportunity to provide for the family. Nassif, acknowledging his father’s disappointment, understood that his time to leave had come. He resolved to set out that very night.

As darkness fell, Nassif prepared his supplies, filled his water flasks, and armed himself with a walking stick. After bidding farewell to his parents with heartfelt hugs and parting words, his mother expressed her hope for his safety and success, while his father offered a nod of approval, recognizing the significance of his son's journey.

Traveling by night was advantageous due to the cooler temperatures, which were less exhausting than the searing heat of the day. As Nassif ventured northeast through the desert, he felt disoriented, with the endless dunes appearing indistinguishable. Suddenly, a gentle touch against his right foot startled him; it was the very sand cat he had spared earlier. The cat, seemingly grateful, looked up at Nassif and signaled in a specific direction. Nassif followed the cat’s lead, and together they continued their journey.

Days passed under the relentless sun, with their supplies diminishing as they were shared between Nassif and the cat. Just as hope seemed to wane, Nassif glimpsed what appeared to be an oasis on the horizon. Doubting his senses and fearing it was a mirage, he decided to take the risk. The gods of the Runiverse seemed to favor him, as the oasis proved to be real, offering a much-needed respite and signaling a turning point in his journey.
